RODRIGUES, Amalia

(b 23 July 1920, Lisbon, Portugal) Singer, probably the greatest exponent of fado (which see). She emerged from the poor Alfama district of Lisbon in 1939 and eventually toured Europe and the USA, always performing in the traditional black of mourning, worshipped at home with the passion intrinsic to fado. She had some international success in the '60s with 'April In Portugal' on EMI, not strictly fado but sung with the same 'Iberian blues' style. A CD Monitor Presents Amalia Rodrigues on Monitor USA captured her live at the Paris Olympia.
