(b Alton Jay Rubin, 10 Feb. '32, Carencro LA; d 26 Aug. '93, Opelousas) Zydeco accordionist and vocalist, bandleader; also spelled 'Dupsee' in the past. Played hot dance music style steeped in R&B; local venues in Lafayette from '55, covered R&B hits zydeco style; first records '69 for Bon Temps, then Blues Unlimited labels; after New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival '76 signed with Swedish-based Sonet label for Europe: with energetic promotion, critical acclaim, first toured Europe '79 with his group the Twisters, his novelty assisting him: with Clifton Chenier and Queen Ida among first in Louisiana genres to tour there. Guested on Paul Simon album Graceland '86. LPs: Doing The Zydeco '78, Zy-DeBlue '78, Hold On '79, Big Bad Zydeco '80, French Style '82, all on Sonet, some on GNP USA; also Rockin' Dopsie And The Twisters on Rounder USA; Crowned Price Of Zydeco '87 on Maison de Soul/Sonet incl. originals and R&B interpretations; vocal by guitarist Sherman Robertson on 'Something On Your Mind'; his sons Alton Rubin Jr on drums and David on rub-board, John Hart on sax, Paul Senegal on guitar, Alonzo Johnson on bass. The sons have kept the band going with Feet Don't Fail Me Now '96 on AIM.
