(b Susan Kay Bogguss, 30 Dec. '56, Aledo IL) Crystal-clear-voiced American country singer. Grew up on farm, sang in school choir, played coffee houses to her own guitar accompaniment, studied metalsmithing at Illinois State U with plans to open jewellery design studio, instead took to the road in a camper, booking herself into clubs all over the Midwest as solo act. Made her own gig tape in Nashville '85, headlining female act at Dollywood '86; signed to Capitol '87, several minor hits followed, 'Cross My Broken Heart' country top 20 '89. Breakthrough came when third album Aces '92 went gold with several top ten hits, won CMA Horizon Award '92; biggest hit with John Hiatt song 'Drive South' '93. Gained respect of Chet Atkins, who recognized a wholesome natural talent; they made duet album Simpatico '94. Other albums: Somewhere Between '89, Moment Of Truth '90, Voices In The Wind '92, Something Up My Sleeve '93.
