PATTON, 'Big' John

(b 12 July '35, Kansas City MO; d 19 March 2002, Montclair NJ) Organist. He settled in New York early '60s, first recorded with Lou Donaldson '62, then under his own name. Influenced by pianists, his organ style is subtler than some; of nine albums '63-9, Grant Green played guitar on the first six (Let 'Em Roll '65 was reissued '93); then there was a long gap until the quintet album Soul Connection '83 on Nilva. This One's For JA '95 on DIW had a quintet incl. Dave Hubbard on tenor sax, tunes by Coltrane, Shorter and Shepp mutated to soul jazz.
