(b 27 May '31, Covington KY; d 4 Aug. '87, Florence KY) Country singer, called "The Round Mound of Sound' due to his size. Played guitar as teenager on WZIP Radio, Cincinatti '45-8; joined US Army, performed with Horace Heidt USO show in Korea; attended Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, appearing weekends on WLW's Midwestern Hayride, joined accordionist Buddy Ross's Hometowners '57 as lead singer and became Hayride regular. Moved to Nashville early '60s, signed with new Boone label '65, had hits "Walking On New Grass', "Happy Tracks', "Grass Won't Grow On A Busy Street', "My Goal For Today' '66-7; became regular on Hee-Haw TV show. Moved to RCA '69; Boone LP Happy Tracks '67 reissued on RCA; returned to top 10 with "Northeast Arkansas Mississippi County Bootlegger', "Biloxi', "The Sheriff Of Boone County' '70-1, stayed in top 40 '72-4, but RCA dropped him '76; joined MRC label and had minor chart comeback with "Afraid You'd Come Back' '78; recorded for Dimension '80.
