(b 10 Sep. '37, Oklahoma City OK) Country singer with smooth baritone, easy-listening feel, as befit a cousin of popular '20s crooner Gene Austin. Began as Tommy Dean on Saturday morning TV show in Houston; attended U. of Texas '56-7, served in US Army, toured with Austin '61-2, worked clubs around Texas, moved to Nashville '67, was office manager at Dot's Nashville office, began recording for Dot. Made country top 5 with "Gwen (Congratulations)' '71 followed by top 10 hits through '76, building reputation as top class entertainer with five-piece band the Nashville Express. Last top 5 was "Don't Go City Girl On Me' '77. Joined Tina label '79, Elektra '79-81, AMI and Gervasi without chart success.
