OMOGE, Madam Comfort

(b '29, Ilititun, Ondo State, Nigeria) African singer/composer whose Asiko Ikale Group occupy a unique place. She began performing at age 17 but remained an amateur, spending most of her time looking after her husband, the Oba of Igbodigo, and their seven children; then she formed the 17-piece percussion group '72, playing an updated version of traditional Ere Aboba Asiko music using only trad. instruments, with no electric or studio effects. First LP on Decca '76 was Biri; others incl. Ore Mi, Agbala Woma, Olorun Mi Iwo, Munene Munene. With revival in '80s of trad. styles such as Apala, Fuji and Waka, she confirmed her national reputation with Ona Orun Jin and Nigeria Settle '83, Adeleke Special '84.
