NEWTON, Juice

(b Judy Kaye Cohen, 18 Feb. '52, Lakehurst NJ) Country-rock singer, songwriter and guitarist with success in mainstream country and pop crossover. Juice (family nickname that stuck) grew up a Navy brat in Virginia Beach VA, started in California folk-rock scene, joined singer- songwriter Otha Young to form rock band Dixie Peach and they remained musical partners. They formed Juice Newton and Silver Spur '73, signed to RCA '75 with minor country hit 'Love Is The Word'; wrote Carpenters' 'Sweet Sweet Smile'; moved on to Capitol '77, disbanded Silver Spur and working as Juice Newton made pop charts with 'It's A Heartache' '78. An unbroken ten- year run of consecutive country hits began with 'Let's Keep It That Way' '79; big crossover began with album Juice '81 and hits 'Angel Of The Morning', 'Queen Of Hearts' and 'The Sweetest Thing'; further hit albums were Quiet Lies and Dirty Looks '82--3. Switched to RCA '84 and lost pop momentum, but fared well on country charts with no. ones 'You Make Me Want To Make You Mine', 'Hurt' and 'Both To Each Other' (latter duet with Eddie Rabbitt); an accomplished horsewoman, Juice married professional polo player Tom Godspeed '86, continued to tour with Young but was latterly without a recording contract. Albums incl. Juice Newton And Silver Spur '75, After The Dust Settles '75--6; Well Kept Secret and Take A Heart '78--9 on Capitol; Can't Wait All Night '84, Old Flame '86, Ain't Gonna Cry '89 on RCA.
