McPARTLAND, Jimmy

(b James Duigald McPartland, 15 March 1907, Chicago; d 13 March 1991, NY) Trumpet in Chicago style (see Jazz); his brother Dick (b Richard George McPartland, 18 May 1905, Chicago; d 30 November 1957, Elmhurst IL) was a well-known guitarist in the genre, who replaced Eddie Lang in the Mound City Blue Blowers (see Red McKenzie), but had to retire from music late '30s because of ill health. Jimmy replaced his idol Bix Beiderbecke in the Wolverines, continued playing Bix-inspired horn with Ben Pollack, Roger Wolfe Kahn, Russ Colombo, Smith Ballew; joined his brother's Embassy Four in Chicago '34, formed his own band late '30s; took part in the Normandy invasion '44, met and married Marian McPartland '45 (see her entry). He led his own bands in the Midwest late '40s, 50s; worked long spells at Nick's etc in NYC from late '50s; acted in TV play The Magic Horn; in '65 played at 75th anniversary party for Chicago's Austin High School, where it all began. Played in '60s with Bud Freeman, Tony Parenti, Peanuts Hucko (b Michael Andrew Hucko, 7 April 1918, Syracuse NY; d 19 June 2003, Fort Worth TX); at Newport Jazz Festival with Marian '78, was still working in the '80s.
