McNULTY, Chris

(b 23 December 1953, Melbourne, Australia) Singer. She spent her early career touring Australia and South East Asia; she did some studio recordings which probably didn't get distributed outside Australia. With an international study grant '88 from the Australian Council for the Arts she moved to NYC and made her first American album: Waltz For Debbie '88 on Discovery got a rave review in Cadence, with George Mraz and Kenny Washington (the title track is the Bill Evans tune with lyrics by Gene Lees, but spelled wrong: it's supposed to be 'Debby') and she wrote her own lyrics to Miles Davis's 'Blue In Green'. A straightahead singer, she also does some writing; she has her own style but some critics compared her to June Christy. She was one of five vocalists on Big Apple Voices '92 on Venus with an all-star band including Cyrus Chestnut, Vincent Herring and Nat Adderley. As a single parent she has also been busy raising her son, Sam, who she sang about on Discovery. A Time For Love '93 on Amosayo with Gary Bartz, John Hicks, Harvie Swartz etc was co-produced by herself with Peter Leitch; tunes including 'Three Little Words', 'Nice And Easy', 'Lost In The Stars'. Her next album was I Remember You 2004 on Mop Top Records with notes by Bartz, who compared her voice as an instrument to those of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.
