McCARTERS, The

Traditional-sounding family country trio: lead singer Jennifer Lorene McCarter (b 7 March 1964) and her twin sisters Teresa Faye and Lisa Kaye (b 21 November 1966), all from Knoxville TN. Raised in nearby Sevierville, they started out clog dancing at an early age and appeared on Knoxville TV for four years. Jennifer took up guitar and singing, the sisters practiced harmonies and the trio performed in the Pigeon Forge resort in Smoky Mountains, moved to Nashville '87 and landed a record contract with WB; several top 10 country hits included 'Timeless And True Love', 'The Gift' and 'Up And Gone' '88-9. They toured with Randy Travis, guested on Dolly Parton's Dolly Show on national TV, for a while worked as Jennifer McCarter & Carter Sisters but reverted back to their original stage name. Youthful beauty and infectious country music laced with energy and power seemed to mean a long run, but further hits were not forthcoming and they were dropped by WB '92; they continue to tour regularly, especially in Europe where their clear, country harmonies were fully appreciated. Albums included The Gift '88 and Better Be Home Soon '90 on WB.
