McCRACKLIN, Jimmy

(b 13 August 1921, St Louis MO; d 20 December 2012, San Pablo CA) R&B singer and songwriter, one of the best. He also played piano and harmonica. He was a professional boxer in the mid-1940s, first recorded for Globe in Los Angeles in 1945, then Peacock, RPM/Modern; at the height of R&B influence on Checker in Chicago '57 when he scored with dance hit 'The Walk', a top ten '58 both pop and R&B charts. 'Just Got To Know' was a no. 2 R&B hit on Art-Tone '60, 'Think' an R&B top ten '65 on Imperial; he recorded for Stax c.1971 (including LP Yesterday Is Gone with the Memphis Horns), Vanguard '75. He made over 30 albums; there were compilations on Bullseye, Stax and several on the German Bear Family label. At his death he had 269 tunes registered at Broadcast Music Incorporated.
