BLACKMAN, Cindy

(b 18 Nov. '59, Yellow Springs OH) Drums, composer. Freelanced with Joe Henderson, Jackie McLean, Don Pullen, debut on Muse was septet Arcane '87, with Henderson and trumpeter Wallace Roney. Code Red '92 was a triumph, with Steve Coleman, Roney, Kenny Barron and Lonnie Plaxico, followed by Telepathy '92. Trio + Two '90 was co-led by Santi Debriano and Dave Fiuczynski, released on FreeLance. Her blisteringly energetic but controlled music is reminiscent of the work of her greatest influence, Tony Williams; technique and improving compositional skills mark her as a rising star. Played on Jackie Terrasson's What's New '92, contributing tune 'Till Then', and on Grand Central Tenor Conclave: A Tribute To Hank Mobley '95 with Ravi Coltrane and Craig Handy, on Still Life '96 on Evidence with Charnett Moffett.
