MAYS, Bill

(b 5 Feb. '44, Sacramento CA) Pianist and composer. Studied at San Diego State, acompanied Sarah Vaughan and Al Jarreau, worked and recorded with Bud Shank (see that entry), Shelly Manne and others. Formed a trio '82, backed singer Mark Murphy, recorded in duo with bassist Red Mitchell (Two Of A Mind '82 on ITI), as a quintet with Manne, Tom Harrell, Ralph Moore and Andy Simpkins (Tha's Delights '83 on Trend), moved to NYC '84. Further albums incl. Kaleidoscope '92 on Jazz Alliance, One On One and One On One 2 with Ray Drummond on DMP; then on Concord: trio An Ellington Affair '94, trio with guests Mays In Manhattan '96, with Ed Bickert in Concord Duo Series Vol. 7 and solo Live At Maybeck Recital Hall. He's also worked with Gerry Mulligan, Benny Golson, many others.
