MANGIONE, Chuck

(b Charles Frank Mangione, 29 November 1940, Rochester, NY) Trumpet, flugelhorn, piano, composer. His father introduced him to jazz and to stars like Dizzy Gillespie; he studied at Eastman, co-led a combo with pianist brother Gap (b Gaspare Charles Mangione, 31 July 1938, Rochester) including LPs The Jazz Brothers, Hey Baby! and Spring Fever '60-1 on Riverside including Sal Nistico (some tracks later on Milestone and Fantasy). Gap taught and composed in Rochester; Chuck made Recuerdo '62 on Jazzland, played with Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Art Blakey ('65-7), directed the Jazz Ensemble '68-72 at Eastman, formed a quartet '68.

Friends And Love '70 was a PBS broadcast with the Rochester Philharmonic and a two-disc set on Mercury, including a Hot 100 single 'The Hill Where The Lord Hides'; his easy-listening jazz-flavoured LPs have been selling well ever since, including two-disc Together (also with the Rochester Phil), Quartet, Alive!, Land Of Make Believe at Massey Hall with Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra '71-3. He switched to A&M; Chase The Clouds Away '75 made the top 50 LPs with title Hot 100 hit; Belavia (his mother's maiden name) '75 did well; Main Squeeze '76 slipped to no. 86 but Feels So Good '77 was a no. 2 LP with a no. 4 title hit. Children Of Sanchez '78 was no. 14; two-disc An Evening Of Magic '79 was made live at the Hollywood Bowl; Fun And Games was a top ten LP including 'Give It All You Got', top 20 hit for Winter Olympics. Tarantella was a benefit for Italian earthquake victims with guests Gap, Gillespie, Chick Corea; Love Notes, Journey To A Rainbow, Disguise, Save Tonight For Me, Eyes Of The Veiled Temptress '82-8 were on Columbia. Other albums include 70 Miles Young on A&M, compilations on Mercury; other singles include 'Land Of Make Believe' with vocal by Esther Satterfield.

On their way to a gig, two members of the Mangione band, reedman Gerry Niewood and guitarist Coleman Mellett, were killed in the crash of a commuter aircarft near Buffalo NY on 12 February 2009.
