LAWRENCE, Tracy

(b 27 Jan. '68, Atlanta TX) One of the new young hunks in early '90s country music. Raised in Foreman AR, sang in local church choir, played in honky-tonk bands from age 15 around Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma; landed regular gig on Kentucky radio show Live At Libbys. He moved to Nashville '90, signed to Atlantic Records and shortly after completing debut album Sticks And Stones '91 was shot four times in attempted holdup while returning to his motel in Nashville, hospitalized for two months. Complete recovery saw first single 'Sticks And Stones' top country chart; album went platinum as Lawrence chalked up further big country hits incl. 'Alibis', 'Can't Break It To My Heart', 'If The Good Die Young', 'Texas Tornado', 'Stars Over Texas' (all no. ones '93--6). Writing and co-writing most of his own hits, Lawrence is one of the good ol' boys of modern country, but with boyish good looks, sensitive way with a lyric and fiddle and steel guitar lead and his Little Elvis backup band, he appealed both to young fans and those who grew up on Haggard and George Jones. Albums Alibis, I See It Now, Live and Time Marches On have all been hits.
