LOSS, Joe

(b Joshua Alexander Loss, 1910, London; d there 6 June 1990) Bandleader, violinist; debuted with his first band '30 at the Astoria Ballroom in Charing Cross Road, then at the Kit-Kat club '32-4, successful ever since with strict tempo dance music. His popular vocalist '34-42 was Chick Henderson (d 1944 in the Royal Navy); 'Begin The Beguine' was a Henderson hit (while Billy Cotton borrowed the famous Artie Shaw version, Loss had his own). 'A Tree In The Meadow' reached top 20 in the USA '48 on RCA with a vocal by Howard Jones. Loss's music was still in demand in the 1980s for society affairs.
