(b Joshua Alexander Loss, '10, London; d there 6 June '90) Bandleader, violinist; debuted with first band '30 at Astoria Ballroom in Charing Cross Road, then at Kit-Kat club '32-4, successful ever since with strict tempo dance music. Popular vocalist '34-42 was Chick Henderson (d '44 in Royal Navy); "Begin The Beguine' was a Henderson hit (while Billy Cotton borrowed the famous Artie Shaw version, Loss had his own). "A Tree In The Meadow' reached top 20 in USA '48 on RCA with vocal by Howard Jones. Loss's music was still in demand in the '80s for society affairs.
