LEE, Dickey

(b Dickey Lipscomb, 21 Sep. '41, Memphis TN) Country/pop singer, songwriter. Boxed and played football in high school, led band the Collegiates, country at first but switching to rock'n' roll; landed radio series in Santa Barbara CA. Signed with Sun Records, teamed with Jack Clement and Allen Reynolds to prod. lightweight rock'n'roll. Completed major in commercial art at Memphis State U., moved to Beaumont TX and wrote "She Thinks I Still Care', no. 1 country hit for George Jones '62, became a standard. Lee had pop hits "Patches', "I Saw Linda Yesterday', "Laurie (Strange Things Happen)' '62-5; but had a great love for country music and moved to Nashville '70, signed with RCA and producer Reynolds; second single "Never Ending Song Of Love' went top 10 country '71, followed by "Ashes Of Love', "The Busiest Memory In Town', "Rocky' (no. 1), '9,999,999 Tears' and "'If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody' all '72-7. Moved to Mercury '79, but good albums Dickey Lee '79, Again '80, Everybody Loves A Winner '81 had less chart success; he devoted more time to writing: he laid foundation of the Don Williams style, wrote hits for Brenda Lee, Glen Campbell, Tammy Wynette, and well into the '90s with hits for Tracy Byrd, George Stait etc.
