'94, Decatur GA) Soul/R&B singer, a contemporary of Percy Mayfield and Otis Leavill, who helped found a Chicago soul sound with 11 Hot 100 entries '63-5 on Okeh, of which the biggest were "The Monkey Time' and "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um' '63-4 (both top 10 USA); he had several more hits in the soul chart '66-71; left CBS '68 and recorded for Dakar, Curtom, Volt, WB, Playboy, others; "Stay Away From Me (I Love You Too Much)' on Curtom '70 was no. 13 soul, 67 pop. His delightfully deft approach went out of fashion.
