LYNNE, Shelby

(b Shelby Lynn Moorer, 22 Oct. '68, Quantico VA) Blues-flavoured country singer with strong leanings towards both hillbilly and jazz. Started singing as a child, her father a local bandleader; with younger sister Alison sang backup harmonies at local club dates. The family was destroyed when the father murdered his wife, then committed suicide in the driveway '86; Shelby immersed herself in music. Unsuccessful Opryland audition led to demo work and appearances on TNN's Nashville Now; signed to Epic '88 and duet with George Jones 'If I Could Bottle This Up' made country charts; further minor hits '89--92. Signed with Morgan Creek Entertainment and cut Temptation '93, a big-band, western swing-styled album. She has a high reputation among her peers but had not made a commercial breakthrough; she may yet emerge as a major and influential performer. Other albums incl. Sunrise '89, Tough All Over '90, Soft Talk '91 on Epic; Restless '95 on Magnatone
