KIDJO, Angelique

(b '60, Oudah, Benin) Singer. Childhood infl. incl. the Beatles and James Brown, as well as more local impact from South Africa's Miriam Makeba; had some training in vocal technique and jazz in Paris '83. Albums (all on Mango): Parakou '89 combined her powerful and natural voice with layers of percussion and sophisticated arrangements; Logozo was less obviously African but had some international impact; Aye '94 led the way to a dance-funk she-devil image. Perhaps the most prominent African female voice internationally since Makeba, she sang about topical issues such as AIDS, injustice and poverty in her native language, Fan. Album Fifa '96 catches her electric stage presence.
