(b 1 June '41, Greenwood AR) Honky-tonk country singer, songwriter; one-time auto-driver and mechanic; grew up in Oklahoma; played club circuit during late teens; signed to Dial Records in Nashville '63; wrote 'Love Bug' for George Jones '65, 'The Image Of Me' '68 plus several more country number ones for Conway Twitty; association with Twitty led to Decca contract '70 and several minor country hits; also charted for MCA, UA, Mercury and Door Knob; self-penned 'I'll Leave This World Loving You' '80 revived by Ricky Van Shelton '88. Albums incl. Wayne Kemp '72, Kentucky Sunshine '74 on MCA.
