KAHN, Tiny

(b Norman Kahn, c'24, NYC; d 19 Aug. '53) Drummer and arranger. Began studying drums at 15, played with Boyd Raeburn, Georgie Auld, Chubby Jackson and Charlie Barnet late '40s; Stan Getz and Elliot Lawrence early '50s; he also recorded '47 with Serge Chaloff on Savoy and Red Rodney on Keynote, with Al Cohn '50 on Triumph/Savoy. A fine modern drummer and a promising writer/arranger, he wrote 'Tiny's Blues' and 'Father Knickerbopper' for Jackson, arr. 'Godchild', all on Columbia 78s '49, and an imaginative version of 'Over The Rainbow' for Barnet, who was very fond of him and described in his memoirs how Kahn's weight fluctuated wildly. Ill health cut short an important talent.
