Grew up in Harlem, sang backup with Melba Moore and others, member of R&B group Mystic Merlin, went solo and had more no. 1 hits in the black chart '80s than any other male artist, also crossing over strongly: Capitol albums incl. Rock Me Tonight '85, top ten pop album, two top 20 singles incl. title track, made with the help of Moore's prod. and management company, followed by Just Like The First Time '86, Don't Let Love Slip Away '88, Do Me Again '90, Time For Love '92; switched to Orpheus/RCA for Here It Is '94, Street Life for Private Party '95 (top 200 pop albums, top 30 in the black album chart).
