JORDAN, Steve

(b Estaban Jordan) Tex-Mex accordionist, songwriter, one of the best of a new generation, coming to prominence in David Byrne's film True Stories '86 (soundtrack on EMI). Like Flaco Jimenez he has borrowed from other genres to create an idiosyncratic style; unlike Flaco he uses synths, phase shifters etc. Also renowned for showmanship. Nevertheless his repertoire is firmly rooted in polkas, rancheras and corridos (song-stories) of Tex-Mex music. Began recording '60s; worked with his brothers Bonnie and Silver on McAllen-based Falcón label, later recorded for Fama, Freddie, Hacienda, California-based Aguila, his own El Parche label (named after his "trademark' eye patch), then RCA: Turn Me Loose '86 on RCA was nominated for a Grammy. Recorded soundtrack for Born In East L.A. same year as True Stories. Other albums: Mirada Que Facina on Freddie, My Toot Toot on RCA International, both '85; Steve Jordan '87 on Arhoolie (reissue of Las Coronelas on RyN), also El Hurocan and The Return Of El Parche on Rounder.
