(b 2 Feb. '55, Southampton, England) Singer, synthesisers. Joined first band age 15 in Canada after family's emigration; returned to UK to study at Manchester U., where he acquired hhis first synthesiser. Began playing pubs and clubs around High Wycombe witn mime artist Jed Hoile. His brand of "one-man band' music found success with debut single "New Song' (UK no. 3 '83); on three more top 10 hits his inoffensive synth-pop was in tune with pop blandness of the early '80s; Human's Lib '84 entered UK LP chart at no. 1, incl. all the hit singles and displaying limitations of the style. Dream Into Action '85 was a marginal improvement with funky "Look Mama', at no. 10 his best chart showing in USA. "No One Is To Blame' featured guest Phil Collins; album One To One '86 prod. by Arif Mardin, followed by Cross That Line '89, In The Running '92.
