JONES, David Lynn

(b 15 Jan. '50, Bexar AR) Country-rock singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, best known as writer of Willie Nelson's "Living In The Promiseland'. Built up cult following around his hometown, his country style having Springsteen and Dylan overtones; he worked as a car salesman, then joined Freddy Morrison and the Bandana Blues Band on bass '71, made several forays into Nashville between '71-6 without success. Moved to Houston and played sessions incl. Kenny Dale's "Bluest Heartache Of the Year' '76; toured with Fiddlin' Frenchie Burke and Randy Corner; wrote Corner's "Heart Don't Fail Me Now' country hit '76. Teamed up with Richie Albright '85 leading to contract with Mercury in Nashville. Debut album Hard Times On Easy Street '87 received rave reviews; single "Bonnie Jean (Little Sister)' went Top 10 country; Waylon Jennings added harmonies to "High Ridin' Heroes', top 20 hit '86. Disillusioned with Nashville, moved back to Bexar, made third album Mixed Emotions '92 (later on Liberty) in his own home studio: joint production with Richie Albright using Jones' own band was a highly charged blend, the essence of Jones' distinctive country-rock. Other albums incl. Wood, Wind and Stone '89 (Mercury).
