(b 15 May '01, Reserve LA; d 11 Feb. '67) Baritone sax, then mainly clarinet. Father was member of Onward Brass Band; of three brothers also musicians, most prominent was Herbert (b 28 March '07, also played reeds, still touring early '80s). Toured with territory bands to Florida, then to NYC in a band with Cootie Williams; with Claude Hopkins '29--35, Lucky Millinder '36, again '37; with small groups incl. Zutty Singleton, Joe Sullivan, Red Allen, Teddy Wilson; turned down offer from Duke Ellington '42; own groups for long residencies until joining Louis Armstrong's All-Stars '55--8; continued gigging, touring Europe '60s. Blue Note records incl. gorgeous Edmond Hall Celeste Quartet session '41 with Meade Lux Lewis playing celeste, Charlie Christian, Israel Crosby on bass: 'Profoundly Blue' was one of Blue Note's first hits; his All Star Quintet '44 incl. Red Norvo, Teddy Wilson; played on Blue Note Jazzmen sessions led by himself '43, Sidney De Paris and James P. Johnson '44; all collected in one of Mosaic's first sets, six-LP/four-CD Complete Edmond Hall/James P. Johnson/Sidney De Paris/Vic Dickenson Blue Note Sessions. Work with Armstrong incl.
