HAYES, Clancy

(b Clarence Leonard Hayes, 14 Nov. '08, near Parsons KS; d 13 March '72, San Francisco) Banjo, singer, songwriter. Began on drums, then guitar, banjo; sang on radio late '20s; with Lu Watters '38--50 (often on drums), Bob Scobey '50s; later a regular at Earthquake McGoon's (Turk Murphy's) Club; guested with World's Greatest Jazz Band. Unpretentious folksy style and strong baritone made a natural vocalist in imitation turn-of-the-century style of West Coast 'revival' jazz; Scobey single 'Silver Dollar'/'Ace In The Hole' on Good Time Jazz '53 got airplay; same year recorded his own song 'Huggin' And Chalkin'' with Scobey, which had been a no. 1 hit '46 for Hoagy Carmichael; a few years later Ma Rainey's 'C. C. Rider' backed with 'Travellin' Shoes' (co-written by Hayes) on a small California label. Charming vocals on Scobey LPs mid- '50s incl. 'Parsons Kansas City Blues', 'I Want To Go Back To Michigan', 'Careless Love', 'Angry', many more, mixing dixieland chestnuts, vaudeville and nostalgia. Own LP Swingin' Minstrel '63 on Good Time Jazz, with Jess Stacy, Shelly Manne, Ralph Sutton.
