HINO, Terumasa

(b 25 Oct. '42, Tokyo, Japan) Trumpet, flugelhorn, composer. Studied work of everyone from Louis Armstrong through Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard to John Coltrane, then joined Japan's top band, the Hidao Shiraki quintet. Formed own band '64, recorded award-winning Hinology. Moved to USA '75, played with Jackie McLean, Gil Evans, toured with Dave Liebman. Joined Blue Note late '80s, produced Bluestruck featuring Bobby Watson and John Scofield '89, then From the Heart '91, Unforgettable '92. Equally adept in fusion, straightahead, hard bop or freer settings.
