HIGGINBOTHAM, J.C.

(b 11 May '06, Atlanta GA; d 26 May '73, NYC) Trombonist; aka "Jay C.' or "Jack'. Underrated by many critics, but not by jazz fans or musicians: brought the extrovert "gut bucket' style into the Swing Era; always forceful, swinging, with superb attack, admired by Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, many others. From musical family; studied tailoring and worked as a mechanic, but music won: sat in with Chick Webb at the Savoy Ballroom NYC '28, went with Luis Russell '28-31, Fletcher Henderson '32-3, Benny Carter '33, early Lucky Millinder band '34-6, Henderson '37, Armstrong '37-40. Worked with Red Allen in combos '40s, worked in Boston, Cleveland, NYC; played in stellar trombone section on Henderson reunion LP '57 with Benny Morton and Dickie Wells; led own bands '60s (Newport Jazz Festival '63), toured Scandinavia. Also recorded with Sidney Bechet, Coleman Hawkins, Chocolate Dandies, Jelly Roll Morton, others; countless solos as sideman. LPs incl. Tiny Grimes album on Prestige Callin' The Blues; albums Higgy Comes Home on Cable and Comin' Home! on Jazzology are the same.
