HUTTO, J. B.

(b Joseph Benjamin Hutto, 26 April '26, Blackville SC; d '85) Blues singer; guitarist, also drums, piano. Raised in Augusta GA; sang in family gospel group. To Chicago mid-'40s; worked outside music while learning guitar; worked occasional gigs, formed J. B. Hutto and the Hawks late '40s. Recorded on Chance label '54 (fine bottleneck guitar on 'Dim Lights'), worked outside music, recorded for Vanguard '65, etc. At about age 43 he was voted rock/pop/blues act deserving wider recognition by down beat '69. More records, festivals, TV spots etc incl. UK film Chicago Blues '70. One of the tougher exponents of the urban Chicago blues style; described as 'almost violently strong' by Bob Koester at Delmark. LPs incl. eponymous Testament album in Masters of Modern Blues Series, with Walter Horton, Johnny Young, guitar (b 1 Jan. '18, Vicksburg MS; d 18 April '74, Chicago), Lee Jackson, bass; Fred Below, drums; Hawk Squat '68 with Sunnyland Slim and Slidewinder '72 on Delmark, Blues For Fonessa '76 on Amigo (Sweden), Live at Sandy's Jazz Revival as J. B. and the Housebreakers on Baron; last works: Slideslinger and Slippin' And Slidin' on Varrick as J. B. Hutto and the New Hawks (on Demon in UK); two more on New Rose CDs. His nephews incl. Ed Williams and James 'Pookie' Young in Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, recording for Alligator.
