(b Andrew Hogg, 27 Jan. '14, Texas; d there 1 May '60) Blues singer, guitarist; best-known of three Smokey Hoggs, all cousins (John Hogg b '12; Willie Anderson Hogg b '08). Born on a farm, learned guitar as a child, worked at picnics, country dances, etc. First records for Decca in Chicago '37; after WWII for Exclusive, Modern, others; top ten R&B hit '49 'Little School Girl' on Modern. He was one of those fascinating bluesmen of the period who retained trad. down-home appeal while also getting attention from modern listeners during the rise of R&B; in mid-'50s his records were still found on juke boxes in black taverns. Compilation Angels In Harlem on Specialty.
