HILL, Faith

(b Audrey Faith Perry, 21 Sept. '67, Jackson MS) One of country music's most successful female singers of the '90s. Adopted as an infant and raised in the small town of Star MS; moved to Nashville at 19 to pursue career in music; worked selling T-shirts, as secretary, singing demos etc. Signed to Warner Bros '92; with fresh-faced, small- town beauty queen looks, made instant impact with videos and hit songs 'Wild One' (debut single hit no. 1 on country charts '93), 'Piece Of My Heart', 'Take Me As I Am' (both '94). Debut album Take Me As I Am went platinum; follow-up It Matters To Me did equally well and spawned hits 'Let's Go To Vegas' '95, 'Someone Else's Dream' '96. She relies on the Nashville songwriting factory, but her choice of material is inspired: a '90s version of Tammy Wynette with heart-breaking ballad material, also appealing to younger fans with upbeat songs. Married fellow country superstar Tim McGraw October '96.
