ARNOLD, P. P.

(b Pat Arnold, '46, LA) Soul singer. Sang in church choirs from age four; joined Ikettes (Ike and Tina Turner's backing group); while visiting London '66 decided to stay, forming impressive backing trio; signed to Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label, immediately hit with Cat Stevens song 'First Cut Is The Deepest' (UK no. 18, '67). Album First Lady Of Immediate same year was produced by Mick Jagger/Mike Hurst; next LP Kafunta '68 by Jagger and Steve Marriott. Labelmate Marriott also wrote her flop single 'If You Think You're Groovy'; she in turn sang on his group's 'Tin Soldier'. After second top 30 entry 'Angel Of The Morning' she starred in Jack Good production Catch My Soul '69, then Jesus Christ Superstar '70, by which time her former backing group had found fame as the Nice. Returned to USA '70s for film/TV work (Fame, Knots Landing, T. J. Hooker, etc); toured with re-formed Small Faces, '78; contributed to Electric Dreams soundtrack '84, returned to London same year to star in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express; recording for 10 Records '85. First-rate talent never hit the really big time, but had a successful career for all that.
