(b 4 Oct. '44, Santurce, Puerto dc10 Rico) Bass, composer. Graduated from Juilliard '63, gigged in free-jazz group with Paul Bley '64--5, dc0 then joined Bill Evans '66--77, winning a reputation for virtuosic fluency and further honing his extraordinary technique. Greatly in demand as sideman; too much work to list here incl. Joe Locke/Phil Markowitz Quartet's Restless Dreams on Chief and Markowitz's piano trio Sno' Peas '91 on Ken Music with Al Foster; True Fun '84 on Jazz Music is co-led with Liz Gorrill and Lenny Popkin; also with Bill Evans on Fantasy/OJC, several albums with Jeremy Steig on Inner City, Enja and CMP, Prism with Joanne Brackeen etc. Infrequently recorded as leader, but albums incl. Down Stretch '76 on Blackhawk, Gomez '84 on Denon (with Steve Gadd and Chick Corea); Discovery (same set as Mezgo on Epic UK), Power Play and Street Smart '86--9 all on Columbia, Live In Moscow '94 on B&W, Next Future '93 on Stretch.
