GARRISON, Jimmy

(b 3 March '34, Miami FL; d 7 April '76) Bass. Grew up in Philadelphia; played with Bobby Timmons, Al Heath; drove a truck '55-8, then to NYC and full-time music: became an urgent, fundamental force in the great John Coltrane quartet of '61-6 (LPs on Impulse). Worked with Hampton Hawes, Archie Shepp, Elvin Jones; taught at Bennington College (see Bill Dixon) and Wesleyan '70-1; with Jones '73-4; died of lung cancer. Co-led Impulse sextet session with Jones Illumination; recorded with leaders Jones (Puttin' It Together, The Ultimate on Blue Note), with Shepp on Impulse and Arista (There's A Trumpet In My Soul), others as well as Coltrane.
