(b 19 Dec. '47, Fort Wayne IN) Nashville session singer become country star in her own right. Sang in church, later did jingle singing to pay fees while attending U of Indiana. Moved to LA '73 to work as session singer; not enough work so moved to Nashville, where she has sung on over 1,600 records: her work on records by Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Johnny Duncan, Vern Gosdin was unmistakable; with Johnny Cash on 'The Cowboy And The Lady'; work with Duncan on no. 1 country hit 'Stranger' '76 led to Columbia contract '77, first hit 'What're You Doing Tonight'; update of 'Please Help Me I'm Falling' '78 gave her top ten hit, followed by 'Down To My Last Broken Heart' '80, 'I'll Need Someone To Hold Me' '81, 'Don't Worry About Me Baby' '82, 'He's A Heartache (Looking For A Place To Happen)' and 'Tell Me A Lie' '83, 'Let's Stop Talking About It' and 'Your Heart's Not In It' '84. Having toured with Alabama and with prod. Bob Montgomery, moved from ballads into country- rock sound. Named best new female vocalist '78--9, top female vocalist '82--4; continued with country chart hits through '89, last no. 1 was 'Always Have, Always Will' '86. Dropped by Columbia '90 after 17 albums, she became a regular on the Statler Bros TV show on TNN and still tours with her Heart City band. LPs incl.
