FLOYD, Eddie

(b 25 June '35, Montgomery AL) Soul singer. Joined legendary vocal group the Falcons in Detroit (another member was Joe Stubbs, brother of Four Tops frontman Levi Stubbs); they had five R&B hits '59--62, incl. pop top 20 hit 'You're So Fine' '59: Stubbs joined the Contours, replaced by Wilson Pickett, whose lead vocal took 'I Found A Love' into Hot 100 '62. Eddie signed as a solo with Stax, where he had twelve Hot 100 entries '66--70 incl. 'Knock On Wood' '66 (no. 1 R&B chart, top 40 pop both USA/UK), 'I've Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)' and 'Bring It On Home To Me' were top five R&B '68, no. 40 and 17 respectively in pop chart. Also notable as a songwriter ('6345789' covered by Ry Cooder); carried on having hits in black charts through '70s.
