(b 11 Nov. '38, MO; aka Narvel the Marvel) Singer; rock'n'roll, then country with unique dramatic falsetto vocal style. Had own Saturday morning radio show in Bernie MO early '50s; later in bands with Harold Jenkins (who later became Conway Twitty), Charlie Rich. Rock'n'roll hit with "Honey Love' '59 on Pink label; made top 100 pop but banned due to risque lyrics. Recorded for small labels; to Nashville '72, signed to Cinnamon label and had country hits "Drift Away' '73, "When Your Good Love Was Mine' '74; signed to Dot when Cinnamon folded; biggest hit "Reconsider Baby' '75, no. 1 both pop and country. Carried on with "Somebody Hold Me' '75, "Lonely Teardrops' and "My Prayer' '76, "The Feeling's Right' '77, "One Run For The Roses' '78, "Everlasting Love' '79. Recorded for small labels College '79, GMC '81, Lobo '82, Compleat '82-3, Evergreen '83-4. Albums incl. Drift Away '74 on Cinnamon; Reconsider Me '75, A Touch Of Felts '77, Inside Love '78 all on ABC-Dot. Drift Away--Best Of on Bear Family compiles '73-9 tracks.
