EVANS, Doc

(b Paul Wesley Evans, 20 June 1907, Spring Valley MN; d 10 January 1977, Minneapolis) Cornet in dixieland style; played other instruments until c'1931; he was also an arranger in the '30s. He was also a teacher, a dog-breeder; ran own club and directed a local symphony orchestra in Mendota MN '60s.

He often led his own band. The Audiophile label was formed in Saukville WI and recorded Evans, issuing 78rpm records with microgrooves, two songs on each side, on the (correct) theory that all other things being equal; the faster the speed the better the sound. Proper long-playing records on Audiophile in the mid-'50s, often with John W. 'Knocky' Parker on piano, were among the prettiest, most affectionate and best recorded in the revival genre. Compilations and older material was later available on Jazzology.
