(b Frenchy Edwards, 24 Dec. '29, Seminole OK; d 5 April '97) Black country singer. Grew up listening to country music, worked as farm hand, truckdriver, janitor etc before singing in small Texas clubs, then in Oakland CA where he signed with Capitol '70. Based on West Coast, built cult following for honky tonk sound which owed much to Lefty Frizzell. Hits incl. 'Poor Folks Stick Together' '71, 'She's My Rock' '72, 'Hank And Lefty Raised My Country Soul' '73, 'Mississippi You're On My Mind' '75, 'Blackbird (Hold Your Head High)' '76, 'If I Had To Do It Over Again' '78, 'No Way To Drown A Memory' '80, album Just For Old Times Sake '87 on Ragged but Right. Deserved greater success, but helped to pave the way for similarly soulful singers, such as John Conlee and John Anderson.
