(b 25 Sep. '64, Munich, Germany) Organ, composer. Began playing at eleven, and developed individual style, adapting the Hammond with electronic gadgetry to reproduce string bass sound with foot pedals. Inspired but not so much influenced by Jimmy Smith, after German albums on Dr Bohm, Bebab and Koala she made ebullient Enja albums Straight Ahead! '88 and Hot Stuff '90 (featuring Andy Sheppard), That's Me '92 on Bluemoon and Take Off! '95 on Verve, a funk/dance album on which Ray Anderson and Joe Locke, Roy Hargrove and Lonnie Plaxico were not stretched much. Second album on Verve Junkanoo '97 had her regular guitarist Mitch Watkins and drummer Dennis Chambers plus guests Locke, Randy Brecker, David Sanchez and David Murray, Murray and Locke especially bringing something special to the formula.
