De BURGH, Chris

(b Christopher John Davidson, 15 October 1948, Argentina) UK singer/songwriter. Persuaded to tape some songs while studying at Trinity College, Dublin, which led to a record deal; debut LP Far Beyond These Castle Walls '75 set the style: songs of sweeping grandeur just when they were becoming unfashionable. Spanish Train And Other Stories '75 included 'A Spaceman Came Travelling', which became an annual Christmas favourite; At The End Of A Perfect Day '77, Crusader '79 and Eastern Wind '80 continued to balance love songs with imaginative, epic themes, attracting critical hostility but a firm cult following, especially in Europe and Canada. Best Moves '81 was a collection of 'best loved' songs; The Getaway '82 included minor UK hit singles 'Ship To Shore' and 'Don't Pay The Ferryman' (latter also US top 40 hit). Man On The Line '84 was his most assured and commercial album to date, produced by Rupert Hine (in favour for work with Tina Turner and Howard Jones, both of whom guested on it), and included minor hits 'High On Emotion' and 'The Ecstasy Of Flight (I Love The Night)', concluding with 'Transmission Ends', about destruction of planet Earth. Into The Light '86 included 'The Lady In Red', no. 1 UK/3 USA; the '83-6 albums charted in the USA. Further albums were Flying Colours '88, Spark To A Flame '89, High On Emotion -- Live From Dublin '90, Power Of Ten '92, This Way Up '94.
