DAY, Bobby

(b Robert Byrd, 1 July '32, Fort Worth TX; d 27 July '90, LA) Singer, songwriter. Obits gave his age as 60. He worked at Johnny Otis's Barrelhouse Club; wrote 'Little Bitty Pretty One', but his own version was beaten in charts by that of Thurston Harris '57 (see Aladdin); his own six entries in Hot 100 '57--9 incl. 'Rock-In Robin' (no. 2), 'Over And Over' (no. 41). He sang lead with the Hollywood Flames, who did beautiful ballads but had R&B hits with novelties: 'Buzz Buzz Buzz' no. 11 '57; met Earl Nelson in the Flames, formed act Bob and Earl, but Day was succeeded by Bob Relf (their biggest hit was 'Harlem Shuffle' '63). Day's songs were covered by Dave Clark Five, Jackson Five, etc.
