DAWKINS, Jimmy 'Fast Fingers'

(b 24 October 1936, Tchula MS; d 10 April 2013, Chicago) Blues singer, guitarist. Self-taught in teens; to Chicago, working outside music '55-7, then in street for tips, formed own band for gigs, worked clubs, recorded as sideman; worked with Magic Sam, others. Recorded for Delmark '68 and in '70s: LPs included Fast Fingers, All For Business, Blisterstring. He also accompanied Luther Allison on that label '69; played many blues festivals; toured Europe '70-71; won Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz of Hot Club of France '71 for Fast Fingers. He recorded in France that year; appeared at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival with Otis Rush '72, part of the set issued on Atlantic; recorded in London '72; appeared in videotapes Born In The Blues '73, Sincerely The Blues '75, Roots Of Country Music And Blues '77. LP Transatlantic 770 on Sonet UK; Phur Real '95 on Wild Dog Blues recorded in Atlanta with an octet.
