Sang in gospel groups; sang back-up from c'63 with Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Jackie Wilson, Frank Sinatra; own records '67 as Doris Willingham (married name); toured Europe '68 with Nina Simone, adopted name Doris Duke, album I'm A Loser '69 prod. by Jerry Williams on short-lived Canyon label made top 20 in soul charts; singles "To The Other Woman (I'm The Other Woman)' no. 7, "Feet Start Walking' no. 36 (latter reached 109 in pop charts), all '70. Williams prod. highly rated A Legend In Her Own Time on Mankind; other albums incl. B.C. on CBS, Flight Time on Sandra, Funky Fox on Manhattan; still highly regarded, but big-time commercial success eluded her.
