ADLER, Lou

(b '35, LA) Pop music entrepreneur, notable since late '50s when he managed Jan and Dean in partnership with Herb Alpert. Also wrote songs under name of Barbara Campbell ('Only Sixteen', for Sam Cooke). Worked for Screen Gems (music publisher), Colpix and Dimension (labels), involved with Shelley Fabares (beach party actress with no. 1 hit 'Johnny Angel' '62; played in three Elvis Presley movies, on TV's Donna Reed Show; married Adler '64), as well as Carole King, Steve Barri and P. F. Sloan, the last two songwriters/producers helping to launch Dunhill Productions (later record label) '64. Adler oversaw hits by Mamas and Papas, Barry McGuire (whose '65 no. 1 'Eve of Destruction' was written by Sloan). Also produced non-Dunhill acts such as Johnny Rivers and Jan and Dean. Sold label to ABC '66; involved with Monterey Pop Festival and launched Ode label '67. Ode's first hit was 'San Francisco (Flowers In Your Hair)' by Scott McKenzie; another act was Spirit, and Adler produced songwriter-turned-performer Carole King to huge success.
