(b 9 July '06, Baton Rouge LA; d June '85, L.A.) Clarinet. Played on Mississippi riverboats, joined Kid Ory '44; with Louis Armstrong '56, again '61 through "Hello Dolly!' sessions; other sessioning incl. John Fahey LP After The Ball '73; led dixieland bands. One of the best low-register players around, as on own hit "Yellow Dog Blues' (no. 43 '58; the slap-tongue sound was not his usual style). Album Barrelhousin' With Joe on GHB. He played with everybody and told all in Telling It Like It Is '87, edited by Peter Vacher, a better-than-usual memoir.
