DEE, DAVE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK and TICH

A UK beat group of the 1960s, originally Dave Dee and the Bostons. Lineup: Dave Dee (b David John Harman, 17 December 1941, Wiltshire; d 9 January 2009: as a police cadet he was first on the scene of the car crash that killed Eddie Cochran), vocals; John 'Beaky' Dymond (rhythm guitar), Ian 'Tich' Amey (lead guitar), Trevor 'Dozy' Davies (bass), Mick Wilson (drums) (all b 1944). To London from their native Salisbury to sign with managers/writers Howard & Blaikley, who concentrated on the new group and scored second time out with 'You Make It Move' (top 30 '65), then with 'Hold Tight' (no. 4 '66), adapted from the Routers' '62 instrumental hit 'Let's Go'. Catchy music and Carnaby Street chic helped to make eight more hits '66-8: 'Hideaway' was uncharacteristically subdued while the bouzouki-led 'Bend It' caused dancing on tables; the last three hits were story songs and their popularity fell off to only two top 30 entries '69. Dee left to go solo, had a minor hit '70; the rest of the group made their last top 40 '70. After a brief stab at acting Dee went into A&R with WEA, forming the Double D label, then joined Magnet as promotion boss. One-off reunions culminated in a German tour '82; the nonsense pop transcended the language barrier in Europe.
